There is something about the easy burn of the first sip from a glass of well made bourbon, and something even more special about the first taste of an old fashioned. The bitters, the smell of the orange, the faintness of yesterday that has passed by.
This drink takes me back, to the days where I wasn’t present. It takes me back to the days of buffalo on the prairie, men in three piece suits in swanky hotel bars, wildcatters across all industries pushing the envelope to create something better…and this is what they drank.
The reality of the drink itself is simple, its classic, it serves a purpose and it tastes good. A simple mix or whiskey, bitters, water, orange peel and a cherry (depending on who you ask).
We can all strive to be just like that drink, if you think about it. Sure, its a double edged sword-too much can be detrimental to your success, but isn’t that true with anything?
Too close to the fire can get your burned, too close to perfection can create failure, but the Old Fashioned is the balance, it’s the simple yin and yang between the brute force of straight up whiskey and the soft side of a over processed mixed drink.
This one is for you Mr. Pepper, Cheers!
